Backend Engineering Fellowship - Summer 2026
As a Backend Engineering Fellow, you will spend a summer on a cross-functional team contributing to products that provide often life-changing healthcare to millions of real patients in the United States every day. You will work alongside a dedicated engineering mentor as well as other full-time engineers of all levels to develop skills in feature development, production release and maintenance, and the full life cycle of a product. We’re looking for entrepreneurial, technically skilled, product-oriented engineers who are passionate about the intersection of healthcare and technology.
Fellows will be treated as full members of their engineering team, working on real production systems, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and solving mission-critical challenges. This is a unique opportunity to dive into Ro’s fast-paced environment, expand your technical skillset, and contribute meaningfully to Ro’s mission.
To be eligible for this 12-week-long paid internship, from Tuesday, 5/26/26 - Friday, 8/14, you must be a rising senior and authorized to work in the United States. This is a hybrid opportunity, requiring you to be at our NYC HQ at least twice a week.
What You'll Do:
- Contribute alongside full-time engineers on applications across Ro’s Python and Typescript/React stack, including API development, system design, and database optimization
- Regularly meet with a dedicated engineering mentor, who will help steer your growth as a product engineering fellow throughout the summer
- Collaborate with stakeholders and product, design, and data professionals, throughout the company to understand the needs and priorities of our users and the business
- Be the lead engineer for development of at least one production feature from idea through launch, in addition to core contributions to team projects throughout the summer
- Develop skills in technical execution, product thinking, and leadership, setting a foundation for a long-term career in engineering
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Technical Excellence: Proficiency in Python, experience with REST APIs, relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL), and Git
- Entrepreneurial Drive: A self-motivated approach with curiosity, proactiveness, and ownership of challenges
- Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to tackle complex technical challenges, think critically, and adapt to changing priorities
- Interest in Healthcare & Ro’s Mission: Enthusiasm for the intersection of healthcare and technology and a desire to contribute to impactful solutions
- Product-Oriented Mindset: Passion for building products that solve real problems, considering user experience and business impact
- Prior experience in a software engineering role (internship, personal projects, open-source contributions, or academic research)
- Ability to clearly communicate both technical and business concepts
Bonus Points:
- Familiarity with Django REST Framework and/or FastAPI
- Familiarity with Typescript and React
