(Continuing Education Teacher - Hourly) 

 

Spring 2026 one-semester teacher training position at the College of Staten Island, with opportunities to then be hired for subsequent terms anticipated primarily at the College of Staten Island.

 

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

 

CUNY Start is an intensive pre-matriculation program that helps CUNY associate-degree-seeking students with significant developmental needs increase their academic proficiency in English and/or mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. The CUNY Office of Academic Affairs, the University’s community colleges, New York City College of Technology, and the College of Staten Island work collaboratively to provide students with an innovative approach to developmental education. 

 

CUNY Start is recognized for its carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy, ongoing professional development, and mentor-based training model. CUNY Start programs are currently located on nine CUNY campuses: Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College, College of Staten Island, Guttman Community College, Hostos Community College, Kingsborough Community College, LaGuardia Community College, New York City College of Technology, and Queensborough Community College. JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The CUNY Start Cooperating Math Teacher position (“Cooperating Math Teacher”) is a paid training opportunity to learn to use a successful, student-centered approach and curriculum with CUNY students who have significant developmental math needs. Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Cooperating Math Teacher is responsible for learning and/or supporting the work of an experienced CUNY Start Instructor (“Lead Teacher”) in implementing the CUNY Start or Math Start algebra curriculum in fully in-person, fully online, or hybrid classes. Online work may entail instruction on such platforms as Zoom, Brightspace, Blackboard, and other remote instructional tools that are available and approved by the University and that support the goals and practices of the program. All instructors are expected to be able to teach in-person classes and/or join on-site meetings and events.

 

Key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:

 

  • Work under the guidance and leadership of a Lead Teacher;
  • Study lesson plans thoroughly in advance of all classes and professional development meetings;
  • Observe classes and assist the Lead Teacher in and outside of the classroom (both the online and in-person classroom, as applicable);
  • Lead classroom activities of increasing length over the course of the training semester;
  • Tutor students outside of class time;
  • Prepare for, attend, and participate in regular professional development meetings;
  • Assist in student conferences, orientation, testing, and recruitment;
  • Attend and participate in team meetings with advisors and teachers;
  • Other related duties as assigned.
     

QUALIFICATIONS

 

The preferred candidate will possess the educational and professional qualifications appropriate to the teaching assignment as indicated below:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred;
  • Teaching experience in adult education, developmental education, or related discipline;
  • Willingness to implement a set curriculum and pedagogical approach that builds students' conceptual understanding of mathematics beyond their knowledge of procedures;
  • Experience working with diverse learners;
  • Willingness to travel to multiple CUNY Start campuses after the initial training semester;
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Proactive and detail-oriented with strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor and team member;
  • Ability to receive and incorporate feedback quickly;
  • Computer proficiency using standard academic, administrative, and office software programs/applications.

 

EMPLOYMENT

 

  • $44.31 per hour as a Continuing Education Teacher (CET). 
  • Approximately 25 hours per week, Monday-Friday in daytime programs;
  • Appointment period: up to approximately six (6) months, most likely beginning in January 2026; a maximum of 530 hours for a full six-month appointment;
  • Teachers who successfully complete one semester as CUNY Start Cooperating Math Teachers are eligible to apply for appointments as Core or Support Math Teachers in the program, to the extent that positions are available. 
  • Core or Support openings following Spring 2026 are anticipated primarily at the College of Staten Island. Evening availability is a plus. Summer teaching will be required.
