Engineering/Stormwater Intern
The Montgomery County Engineer’s Office is hiring a full-time intern position for summer, 2026. Full-time summer employment consists of 40 hrs/week for 12 weeks. The position shall pay between $16 and $17 per hour and be based in the Engineer’s Downtown Office at 451 West Third Street in Dayton.
Job Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of the Stormwater Program Manager, perform a variety of assigned duties such as stormwater basin inspections, illicit discharge detection inspections, conservation education assistance, and other duties as assigned. The selected candidate can expect to learn how to read construction drawings, interpret environmental permits, perform a variety of infrastructure inspections, and the value of public service.
Qualifications:
- A High School Degree or GRE and a demonstrated interest in water resource protection, environmental science, or civil engineering.
- Communication skills that include the ability to interact with residents and business owners.
- Clear and concise writing skills.
- Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions over uneven terrain with exposure to various plants and insects.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Ability to be flexible and switch tasks as needed.
- Familiarity with popular computer software (including, but not limited to, ESRI Products, Microsoft Office, and Google Docs) or willing to learn new applications.
- Takes initiative, not afraid to ask questions, dependable, and has strong motivation.
- A valid driver’s license.
Essential Functions:
- Assist County staff with the completion of stormwater basin inspections and associated data input. This is accomplished through a combination of field inspections, letters to property owners, and database management utilizing ESRI Products. The purpose of this task is to ensure that basins are controlling runoff volume and water quality as originally engineered.
- Assist staff in the completion of illicit discharge detection and elimination field work. This is accomplished through visual inspection of manholes. The purpose of this task is to minimize dumping into the storm system.
- Assist staff with writing compliance letters and tracking response from recipients.
- Assist staff inspect road culverts using Ohio Department of Transportation inspection procedures. The purpose of this task is to ensure that culverts are in good repair and not in need of replacement.
- Responsibilities include lifting/moving equipment up to 25 pounds.
