(Nine-Month Program)
Metropolitan is a consortium of 26 cities and water districts that provides drinking water to nearly 19 million people in Southern California. Metropolitan’s mission is to provide its service area with adequate and reliable supplies of high-quality water to meet current and future needs in an environmentally and economically responsible way. Our Engineering staff plans, designs, and manages construction of new facilities, and modifies existing facilities to ensure delivery of high-quality water to approximately 19 million people in Southern California.
Engineering Co-op Internship - $25.00/hour
July 1, 2026 – March 30, 2026
(Summer ends Aug/Sept 2026)
Students will participate in the Engineering Services Group Cooperative Education Program through Metropolitan, Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc., and Cal Poly Pomona’s Center for Community Engagement. The program is designed to enhance students’ academic curriculum along with work experience.
Eligible for Co-op: Students must currently major in Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, etc.).
Not Eligible for Co-op: Seniors graduating during the timeframe of the year-round program are ineligible to apply.
Engineering Co-op Internship
General Duties: Under the direction of a Metropolitan Engineer, you may perform the following:
- Engineering analyses.
- Engineering work such as calculations, design details, and various estimates for (e.g., water
- treatment facilities and distribution systems).
- Preparation of reports, spreadsheets, presentations, project schedules, and/or budgeting.
- Research and data analyses.
- Support fabrication inspection of structural steel, welded steel pipe, and other misc. duties at district facilities.
- Support field inspections, materials testing, related duties including maintaining project records.
- Participation in field work, site visits, and business support as required.
- Maintaining and filing of project records and technical standards and other project and business support work as required.
Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in an accredited four-year B.S. Engineering program with a minimum overall GPA of 2.5.
- Sophomore, junior, or early senior status *Seniors graduating in the timeframe of the Co-op program are ineligible to apply.
- Completion of at least one year of satisfactory study in Engineering and relevant course work needed to perform the duties of the internship.
- Eligible to work in the U.S.
Desirable Requirements:
- Working knowledge of MS Office or other software (e.g., Adobe Pro, Blue Beam).
- Coursework or experience in drafting/drawing preparation; static, dynamic, intermediate structural analysis; strength of material, surveying, and soil mechanics.
- Knowledge of mechanical equipment, welding processes, non-destructive testing, construction means and methods, water treatment plant operations, and water distribution systems.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Work Schedule Details:
- Interns must not accept other internships or jobs during the term of their internship with Metropolitan.
- Interns must not attend summer school during work hours.
Co-op interns will work full-time during the summer (144 hours/month), and part- time (up to 20 hours/week) during the academic year. Students’ work schedules will include every other Friday off, and work will be coordinated with their supervisors. No overtime will be offered.
