Research Technician in Quantitative Imaging of Functional Genome Organization

Research Technician in Quantitative Imaging of Functional Genome Organization

Erceg Lab

Department of Molecular and Cell Biology and Institute for Systems Genomics

Finishing your studies? Thinking about next steps? This position may be for you.

The position in the Erceg laboratory is ideally suited for applicants looking for a gap year after their graduation to develop and enhance their research skills.

OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION:

Fine-tuned chromosome organization and gene expression represent a key to achieve diverse cellular identities. Despite the emerging view of genome organization that complements transcription globally, visualization of the fascinating folding and regulation of a large genome within a small nucleus is still limited. The Erceg laboratory is interested in understanding how integrity and positioning of genome contribute to establishment and maintenance of cell fates using cutting edge imaging approaches.

The successful applicant will gain experience in designing oligonucleotide probes to visualize genomic regions, followed by microscopy on application-specific instrumentation combined with in-depth image analyses. In addition, the applicant would be expected to obtain knowledge about the research area, technical skills on sample preparation and data analyses, and enhance their presentation skills.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, perform, and interpret experiments and computational analyses for genomic and imaging studies.
  • Work with Drosophila.
  • General laboratory maintenance (ordering and receiving supplies, etc.) and management of safety protocols and compliance.
  • Inventory management and record keeping.
  • Assist other lab members with projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in life sciences by the start date.
  • Background knowledge of genetics and genomics as demonstrated by field-specific publications, research experience and/or coursework. Coursework should include foundational courses (or equivalent) in genetics and/or genomics.
  • Hands-on lab experience with standard molecular biology approaches and demonstrated ability to execute complex, multi-step protocols. Interested applicants should ideally have some prior experience using microscopy.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Motivation to work independently and collaboratively in a group setting.
  • Effective written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a temporary 6-month position with the possibility to extend.
