Summer Day Camp Counselor

Position Purpose:  

Counselors are the primary caregivers for Gate Hill campers. A Gate Hill Counselor is responsible for guiding campers through their day by giving support in their personal growth and summer goals. Counselors will supervise, monitor and participate in all activities, including swimming, arts and crafts, sports and games, special events, trips & late stays.


 

Essential Job Functions:


 

  1. Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their group within activities and throughout the camp.


 

  • Assure campers are properly supervised at all times. 
  • Implement routines to guide campers through the flow of the day. (change for swim, walk to and from activities, wash hands, etc.)
  • Redirect inappropriate behaviors in a positive manner.


 

  1. Participate in activities around camp.


 

  • Actively participate in all program areas, special events and theme days as assigned. 
  • Take initiative to assist or lead activities when needed. 


 

  1. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.


 

  • Awareness of camper’s personal health needs. (such as allergies, dietary restrictions and medical needs)  
  • Report to camp nurse for all concerns and injuries. 
  • Report any repairs or unsafe conditions promptly to the camp director.
  • Provide your division leader with appropriate feedback and information for the campers in your group. (this includes written feedback in Dailys and verbal discussions) 




 

  1. Be a role model to campers, staff and camp community. 


 

  • Have a positive attitude, be approachable and friendly to campers and staff.
  • Be mindful of language and demeanor when on camp grounds and camp sponsored trips.  
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules.
  • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices by being the ‘best camper in the room.
  • When interacting with parents, be appropriate and friendly. 


 

Job Requirements:


 

  • Be available for a full 39 day commitment, as well as pre camp orientations.  
  • Be available to work 1 Parent Evening Late Stay.
  • Must be comfortable to get into the pool everyday and always have an appropriate bathing suit. 
  • Be responsible to manage, collect, and distribute bathing suits to the appropriate camper.
  • Serve lunch daily to campers.   
  • Must submit health history and submit all paperwork before the start of camp. Obtain proof of all required vaccinations and medical information. 
  • Ability to accept guidance, feedback, and supervision
  • Be flexible. Due to the nature of the job all staff need to be flexible to schedule change, camper behaviors, etc. 


 

Relationships:


 

  • While at a specific area, adhere to the rules and requirements set up by specialists.
  • Communicate to specialists any issues, restrictions or specific needs of campers prior to activity in an appropriate manner. 
  • When conflict arises, seek out assistance from the Division Leader or Assistant Division Leader. 


 

Physical Aspects of the Job:


 

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Be able to endure long hours of exposure to the sun, heat, prolonged standing, some bending, and walking distances.
  • Be able to get into the pool during designated swim periods. 
  • Ability and willingness to participate in all activities listed on our website.
