Portfolio Monitoring Intern
Key Responsibilities
- Portfolio Monitoring & Investment Tracking: Monitor fund and direct investments, including capital inflows and outflows. Track underlying portfolio company performance metrics and maintain accurate fund- and company-level financial data within internal systems. Conduct asset-level cash flow reviews, identify performance trends and key metrics, and flag potential risks.
- Quarterly Investor Reporting: Assist in preparing and rolling forward quarterly investor reporting templates. Execute standardized external reporting outputs and support the development of a streamlined “New State” reporting framework to consolidate recurring reports. Help finalize and distribute standardized quarterly deliverables.
- Track Record Analysis: Execute and review firm track record reporting. Assist with new track record analysis and formatting, and support the development of enhanced internal reporting with expanded performance insights. Serve as a bridge during the transition of reporting processes to Finance Operations.
- Data Management & Process Improvement: Manage data collection processes and maintain organized databases. Support process mapping, documentation, and workflow improvements. Track and manage credit-related activity data and contribute to broader data architecture and systems planning initiatives. Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and integrity across reporting outputs.
- Infrastructure & AI Initiatives: Assist in building scalable data structures to support portfolio monitoring efforts. Support AI and automation initiatives designed to streamline reporting, data extraction, and analysis. Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce manual processes.
- Ad Hoc Analysis & Investor Requests: Support internal and external investor data requests and assist with analytical projects outside of quarterly reporting cycles. Help manage multiple concurrent reporting needs while maintaining accuracy and timeliness.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Quantitative Economics, Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Information Systems, or a related field.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel required. Strong understanding of the three financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement), financial ratios, performance metrics, and return calculations. Basic knowledge of private equity and private credit structures preferred.
- Comfortable working with large datasets and multiple databases.
- Experience with business intelligence or visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) is a plus. Familiarity with SQL, exposure to scripting languages, or willingness to learn technical tools is advantageous. Prior internship or experience in finance, accounting, or data analytics is preferred but not required.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented with a strong analytical and problem-solving mindset.
- Work in-person in our NYC office.
Star Mountain operates a year-round internship program, including a full-time summer internship program which then continues during the school year in-person on a part-time basis.
