Freelance Tech Writer (Remote)

Are you the person your friends go to for tech advice? Whether you’re a Computer Science or Engineering student, a self-taught tinkerer, or just someone who loves optimizing their digital life, we want to hear from you.

MakeUseOf, How-To Geek, and XDA are looking for technical thinkers to join our team as freelance writers. We don’t just report the news—we explain how technology works and why it matters.

No professional writing experience? No problem. If you have a deep understanding of tech and a passion for sharing that knowledge, we will coach you into a professional tech writer. This is a remote, flexible opportunity perfect for building a portfolio while getting paid to "geek out."

Our Coverage Areas

We are looking for contributors across our major brands. If you’re an expert in any of these, you’ll fit right in:

  • PC & Mobile: Laptops, desktops, smartphones, and the latest hardware.
  • Technical: Networking, privacy, cybersecurity, Linux, and "under-the-hood" analysis.
  • Software: Operating systems, productivity apps, web services, and AI tools.
  • Screen & Entertainment: Streaming platforms, gaming consoles, and home theater.
  • Home Tech: Smart home devices, IoT, and homelab setups.

Who You Are

  • Technically Minded: You might be a student in CS, IT, or Engineering—or you’ve built your own PC and managed your own home server.
  • Analytical: You enjoy figuring out why things work (and why they sometimes break).
  • Self-Starter: You are organized, reliable, and comfortable working in a remote, deadline-driven environment.

The Details

  • Location: Fully Remote.
  • Eligibility: This position is open to residents of the US and Canada.
    • Please Note: Due to specific tax nexus and business registration requirements, we are currently unable to consider applicants residing in the state of California.
  • Role Type: Freelance (1099 Contractor).
  • Compensation: Paid per article (competitive rates based on complexity).
  • Flexibility: Work around your class schedule.

How to Apply

We value your technical perspective over a polished resume. To apply, please submit:

  • A short note telling us about your technical background and which areas you’re most excited to write about.
  • Evidence of your "Geek" side: This could be a link to your GitHub, a blog post, a class project, or even a detailed forum post you're proud of.

Writing samples are great, but if you don't have them, don't worry—just show us that you know your tech.
