Entry-Level Structural Engineer – Job Description

Overview

Our client is one of the largest steel joist and deck fabricators in the United States. This role focuses on designing steel deck and joist systems, supporting multiple departments, and delivering safe, accurate structural solutions.

Responsibilities

• Design steel decking according to Steel Deck Institute standards.
• Review and develop engineering tools specific to steel deck. 
• Design roof and floor systems for retail buildings, schools, warehouses, and similar structures. 
• Provide engineering direction to detailing, design, sales, and production teams. 
• Interpret contract documents and communicate design requirements with architects, engineers of record, and fabricators. 
• Collaborate closely with detailing teams and assist with engineering review prior to detailing. 
• Respond to detailer questions, review drawings, and address RFIs. 
• Design complex or non-standard building components, including double-pitched roofs. 
• Calculate and size pour stops, field modifications, and load-related adjustments. 

Day-to-Day

• Support estimating team by reviewing materials for incoming jobs. 
• Perform engineering review before designs move to detailing. 
• Provide guidance to designers on changes requiring additional structural review. 
• Assist with field issues such as damaged parts, ensuring solutions meet load and measurement requirements.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Civil Engineering or equivalent qualifying degree. 
• Civil E.I.T. certification with intent to pursue Civil P.E. licensure. 
• Interest in structural steel design, specifically steel deck and joist systems. 
• Strong verbal and written communication skills. 

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in steel deck or structural steel design. 
• Civil P.E. certification.
• Experience with ANSYS, STAAD, MathCAD, AutoCAD, or similar tools.
