About the Role:

The Navy Reserve Civil Engineer Corps (CEC) is composed of highly trained engineers and architects who serve as commissioned officers while maintaining civilian careers. This is a part-time leadership opportunity designed for professionals who want to apply their technical expertise in service to national defense while continuing their civilian career.

Responsibilities and Work:

CEC Officers plan, design, and oversee construction and infrastructure projects while leading teams that include Navy Seabees and civilian personnel. They manage facilities, utilities, and engineering systems, support disaster recovery and expeditionary construction efforts, and ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to specification. Officers work across disciplines such as civil and structural engineering, environmental engineering, construction management, architecture and urban planning, and transportation and water resources engineering. The work environment includes Navy bases, construction sites, and operational settings worldwide, combining office, field, and leadership responsibilities, with opportunities to support humanitarian and global infrastructure missions.

Service in the Navy Reserve typically involves one weekend per month and two weeks per year, with additional opportunities for leadership and training. Officers generally serve locally for monthly drills and may travel globally for annual training. Training includes an officer indoctrination pipeline, Civil Engineer Corps Officers School, and ongoing leadership and technical development, along with opportunities for advanced certifications and career progression.

Qualifications:

Applicants must be U.S. citizens with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or a related field, typically between the ages of 19 and 36 at the time of commissioning, with waivers possible. Candidates must meet Navy physical and medical standards and demonstrate strong leadership potential, with professional experience preferred. Ideal candidates have a background in engineering or architecture, an interest in leadership and infrastructure, the ability to balance a civilian career with military service, and a desire to serve in a mission-driven organization.

Why Join:

Joining the Navy Reserve CEC allows professionals to apply their engineering skills to large-scale, real-world projects while gaining leadership experience managing teams and missions. It provides the opportunity to serve the country while maintaining a civilian career, access professional development and training, and be part of the Navy’s expeditionary engineering force.
