Position Title: AmeriCorps Youth Mental Health Fellow

Hours/Time Commitment: In-person, 25 hrs/wk per week; Monday - Friday

• Up to 15 hrs/week of the total 25 hrs/week can be fulfilled via instructional time required for the Mental and Behavioral Health Worker or Practitioner certificate program 

Start Date: September 1, 2026 

End date: June 30, 2027

Location: Specific school placements are determined by geographic location and site availability

Compensation: 

• Living Stipend (pre-tax)  $1236 twice/month 
• Segal Education award upon successful completion of service of $5,176.50

Position and Program Overview: 

AmeriCorps Youth Mental Health Fellows are a part of a national Youth Mental Health Corps initiative that supports youth mental health in schools and communities. This Minnesota-based program combines AmeriCorps service with Century College’s Mental and Behavioral Health Worker certificate program. This program is open to 18-24 year olds who are interested in Behavioral Health career fields and who are currently enrolled or committed to/pursuing enrollment in the certificate program at Century College. 

Youth Mental Health Fellows support 6th-12th grade students with individual and whole-school mental health and school engagement support. They focus on increasing student attendance, on-time-to-school rates, school engagement, and mental health by:  
 

• Providing weekly 1:1 mentorship to up to 15 students 
• Providing an extra layer of mental health support for students
• Supporting with out of school time activities such as tutoring, student clubs, or after-school programs, and
• Collaborating with students and staff to develop and encourage service learning and student leadership activities
   

You Will Learn: 

• Impact student success. As a part of your service, you will be trained on topics that enrich your understanding of and ability to support middle and high school students in Minnesota. As a Youth Mental Health Fellow, you will learn how to navigate and understand the systems that affect students in Minnesota, and identify and enact solutions to the changes that your students are facing.  You will be trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid, Motivational Interviewing and the Establish, Maintain, Restore (EMR) relationship method, which strengthens young people’s autonomy and empowers them to create change. 
• Deepen self-awareness. During your AmeriCorps service, you will be able to explore and clarify your unique strengths and interests and how to use those to meet your personal and professional goals. 
• Practice leadership. As a Youth Mental Health Fellow, you will have the chance to develop and exercise lifelong leadership skills that will make you a powerful force for good.

AmeriCorps Youth Mental Health Fellow Eligibility Requirements 

• 18-24 years of age at the start of service
• High School graduate with a Diploma or GED
• A U.S. Citizen, U.S. National or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States
• Provide proof of enrollment in the Mental and Behavioral Health Worker certificate coursework at Century College 
• Not have served more than the allowed number of AmeriCorps terms before this term—eligibility based on AmeriCorps term limitations
• Able to pass a complete National Service Criminal Service History Background check (including National Sex Offender Registry, State of service and State of residence, and FBI checks) - eligibility requirements listed here
