Social Media and Outreach Intern

SOCIAL MEDIA & DIGITAL OUTREACH INTERN

Part-Time  •  Hybrid (On-Site & Remote)  •  Flexible Hours  •  For-Credit  •  Year-Round

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Hudson River Waterfront Conservancy (HRWC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advocating for and protecting the 18.5-mile Hudson River Waterfront Walkway along the Hudson River's western shore in New Jersey, spanning nine municipalities from Bayonne to Fort Lee.

We advocate for public access, partner with the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, engage local municipalities and developers, and host community events, including our popular Walk the Walkway series. Our mission is both environmental and civic: to provide a free, connected, beautiful waterfront for everyone.

This is a rare opportunity to do meaningful digital communications work for a cause that shapes the public spaces of one of the world’s most iconic waterfronts.

ROLE OVERVIEW

We are seeking a creative, mission-driven Social Media & Digital Outreach Intern to help grow our online presence, document our events and advocacy work, and connect with our growing community of walkers, advocates, and waterfront lovers. You will work directly with HRWC leadership and have real creative ownership of our online voice.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Create and schedule content for Instagram and Facebook, including posts, Stories, and Reels documenting Walkway events, advocacy updates, and scenic photography
  • Assist with management of Conservancy website
  • Photograph and/or film Walk the Walkway events and other HRWC community gatherings
  • Draft compelling captions, announcements, and calls-to-action aligned with HRWC’s mission
  • Build and maintain a monthly content calendar
  • Grow our follower base and engagement through consistent, authentic outreach
  • Support email newsletter content and website news updates as needed
  • Monitor and report on social media analytics monthly
  • Research best practices for nonprofit digital communications and sustainability-focused storytelling

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Currently enrolled in Marketing, Communications, Environmental Studies, Journalism, Digital Media, Public Relations, or a related program
  • Passion for environmental conservation, public spaces, or community advocacy
  • Strong visual storytelling instincts — an eye for a great photo or compelling short video
  • Proficiency with Instagram and Facebook; experience with Canva, CapCut, or Adobe tools a plus
  • Excellent writing skills with an ability to adapt tone for different audiences
  • Organized, reliable, and comfortable working independently in a small nonprofit environment
  • Prior social media or content creation experience preferred but not required

WHY THIS INTERNSHIP STANDS OUT

  • Work on behalf of a beloved public resource used by hundreds of thousands of people along the NJ waterfront
  • Build a genuine portfolio of real-world nonprofit communications and environmental advocacy content
  • Experience the Walkway firsthand, attend events, meet community leaders, and document history as it happens
  • Flexible schedule designed around your academic calendar; for-credit option readily supported
  • Join a passionate, dedicated team that includes board members, legal advocates, and civic leaders
