Passaic County Department of Planning and Economic Development
Position Summary
The Passaic County Department of Planning and Economic Development seeks a driven and dedicated planning intern to assist with local government programs, grants, and technical studies while learning from leaders who have practiced planning in the private and public sectors.
Successful candidates shall assist the Planning Department in a wide range of transportation and land use projects within various rural, suburban, and urban settings. Qualified applicants should be familiar with transportation planning, bicycle and pedestrian planning, complete streets, New Jersey land use and development, planning policy, sustainability and green infrastructure, historic preservation, and economic development.
Essential Responsibilities
- Working with the supervising planner on programs and technical studies including:
- Passaic County's Complete Street Implementation Program
- Open Space Grant Program
- Multiple Bicycle and Pedestrian Implementation projects
- Assisting planning staff and working on North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) grants and ongoing transportation planning activities associated with the annual Subregional Transportation Planning (STP) program.
Qualifications
Required
- Actively enrolled in an institution of higher education toward an Undergraduate or Graduate degree.
- Available at least two (2) days per week up to a maximum of five (5) days per week in person at 401 Grand Street in Paterson, NJ.
- Valid NJ driver’s license.
Essential
- Ability to communicate both written and orally at an exceptional level in person, over the telephone and through other forms of electronic communication.
- Must exhibit strong independent working skills with the ability to engage in collaborative work with minimal direction; but understands when to ask for help or guidance when making critical decisions.
- Ability to exercise judgement and maintain highly confidential or sensitive information.
- Proficient in office computer use, including Microsoft Office, email, and other computer applications.
- Comfortability attending workday meetings with businesses, local officials, and other organizations as required.
Preferred
- Current coursework in Community & Regional Planning or a field closely related to design, environmental science, or civil engineering.
- Experience in program development or marketing.
- Ability to attend evening or weekend meetings as required.
Compensation
- $20 per hour
