Full-Time Volunteer Engagement Associate (with NYC Civic Corps and Grassroots Grocery)

This is an exciting new open position at Grassroots Grocery in association with the New York City Civic Corps, a division of the Mayor’s office.

 

This is a full-time position, about 40 hours per week.

Format: in-person work format 

**Note: Saturday is a working day at Grassroots Grocery. Mondays will generally be remote, while Wednesdays will usually be a day off. This is subject to change based upon community and corporate events.**

  • Office location: Heyground Harlem, 461 W 126th St #5W, New York, NY
    • Tuesdays and Thursdays 9 AM - 5 PM
  • Event location: Urban Edge Shopping Center, 1750 E Gun Hill Rd, Bronx, NY
    • Every Saturday 8:15 AM - 12 PM

Are you passionate about harnessing the power of volunteers to combat hunger in our community? Join us at Grassroots Grocery: a non-profit that works to eliminate hunger and reduce food waste in New York City by rescuing produce and delivering it directly into the hearts of hyper-local communities in the Bronx, Harlem, and Upper Manhattan. We are seeking a motivated individual to join our team as a Full-Time Volunteer Engagement Associate alongside the NYC Civic Corps. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit food justice work, external community and corporate relations, volunteer coordination, and more. This is a full-time position, beginning in September 2024 and ending in June 2025.


 

OBJECTIVES & RESPONSIBILITIES:


 

Objective 1: Settling In — Learning About the Organization and Role (September 2024-October 2024): 

  • Meet with organizational leadership
  • Becoming familiar with the organization and its current partnerships
  • Review Assignment Description for clarity and/or revisions
  • Meet community stakeholders

Objective 2: Become a Primary Point of Contact for our Volunteer Community (September 2024-June 2025) 

  • Act as the primary and proactive communicator for all internal and external queries, managing a diverse range of inquiries from individuals, community groups, and corporate entities through email and our communications portal.
  • Efficiently manage and respond to queries, ensuring timely and thoughtful communication that reflects our values and mission. 
  • Analyze and act upon feedback from volunteers, community groups, and corporate partners to continuously improve engagement strategies and volunteer experiences.
  • Facilitate a welcoming environment for all volunteers, enhancing their connection to our cause and ensuring their experiences are positive and fulfilling. 

Objective 3: Become a Community Group Engagement Specialist (September 2024-June 2025) 

  • Identify potential new community groups for partnership, conducting outreach and presenting volunteer opportunities that align with their interests and our mission. 
  • Serve as the end-to-end coordinator for community group volunteer events, from initial setup and execution to post-event follow-up, ensuring each event is impactful and meets the goals of both the community group and our organization. 
  • Foster ongoing relationships with existing community groups, encouraging and facilitating their continued engagement through regular communication and the introduction of new volunteer opportunities 
  • Track and report on the success and impact of community group volunteer events, using insights to refine and enhance future engagement strategies. 

Objective 4: Become a Corporate Volunteering Engagement Specialist (September 2024-June 2025) 

  • Proactively seek out new corporate partnerships, leveraging our organization's mission and impact to engage corporate social responsibility (CSR) interests and secure volunteering commitments. 
  • Manage the full lifecycle of corporate volunteer events, from planning and coordination to execution and post-event engagement, ensuring a professional and impactful experience.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with corporate partners, focusing on renewal and potential upsell opportunities by presenting additional ways they can support our mission, including sponsorships, in-kind donations, and expanded volunteer engagements.
  • Evaluate and share the outcomes and impacts of corporate volunteer initiatives with corporate partners, reinforcing the value of their contribution and encouraging ongoing support and collaboration. 

Objective 5: Project Closeout and Ensuring Sustainability (May 2024-June 2025)

  • Create transition document that details all aspects of the project, including outstanding assignments, main points of contacts and potential next steps to move the project forward
  • Transition partnerships, developing communication around transition to inform partners about new points of contact after the program ends

An applicant for this position should have:

  • Passion for the cause: genuine interest in our mission, which comprehends sustainability, community empowerment, and food justice
