The reporting location for this position is Calavaras Big Tress State Park in Arnold, CA. This position will work under the direction of State Interpreter III of the Central Valley District.

The State Park Interpreter I (PI) will coordinate the K-12 Access program which engages students and teachers in learning about the park. The position includes both front line interpretive work as well as office based duties such as planning, research and development of interpretive projects, and programs. Duties include implementation of the Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students (PORTS) Program, digital media and content development, and delivery of distance learning presentations for the public with a focus on the K-12 community. Additionally, the position will be responsible for working closely with all staff and volunteers in the park to accomplish the tasks necessary to operate, protect, interpret, and maintain the park to the highest quality standards. This includes implementing interpretive programs (onsite school visits, Junior Rangers, guided walks, campfire program) with a focus on giant sequoia tree interpretation. The position may serve as a lead for seasonal aides, interns, and volunteers.

This position may work up to 1500 hours per year/in a 12 consecutive month period.

Duties

  • Develop high-quality, thematic presentations aligned to academic standards for K-12 education students.
  • Deliver live, interactive online programs via distance learning tools and platforms for individual classrooms as well as broadcast-style presentations for larger audiences and the online public.
  • Utilize modern relevant tools to create and deliver presentations for use by a wide, diverse audience of educators and their students.
  • Enhance interpretive opportunities through the creation of online interpretive resources. Publish materials to a variety of approved platforms and applications.
  • Seek and implement ways to enhance school group interpretive programs for in-person school visits.
  • Create and leverage K-12 digital resources for the park and visiting educators and students to blend digital opportunities with traditional in-park programs.

Qualifications:

  • One year of experience in research and development of historical or natural resource interpretive programs.

Education

  • Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in interpretation, social sciences, natural sciences, communications, or closely related fields.
  • Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of the required education on a year- for-year basis.
