Materials Co-Op - Spring 2025

The Role:
Our site in San Luis Obispo, CA is seeking a Materials Co-Op to join our team for the Spring 2025 season. This assignment is intended to be 6 months in duration. You will engage in optimizing and improving the efficiency of our materials processes related to materials handling, storage, and distribution. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to streamline workflows, reduce waste, and enhance overall material availability and inventory turns.
What You’ll Do:
• Evaluate current materials processes and identify areas for improvement in efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and safety.
• Design and implement systems for inventory management, including replenishment strategies and stock level optimization.
• Develop and maintain standards and procedures for materials handling, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and internal quality standards.
• Participate in cross-functional teams to support new product introductions and process changes, ensuring materials readiness and effective transition.
• Maintain and update master data in ERP system, MES and capacity models to aid production
• Immediately drive manufacturing cycle time reduction projects for your area/s
• Candidate will lead and implement projects to improve operational efficiency and deliver savings which support corporate objectives of on-time delivery, productivity, scrap reduction, etc.
• Work with teams to identify problems, analyze information and develop and implement process solutions
• Time study critical (bottleneck) processes and build capacity models for your area/s
• Time study all processes and build capacity models for essential equipment’s
• Develop and validate capacity models to predict equipment quantities to meet technology ramps
• Develop Value Stream Maps to improve material, process, and communication flows
• Support the implementation of lean manufacturing processes, continuous improvement, standard work, problem solving, value stream mapping, training, and employee involvement
• Responsible for managing the layout of your area/s within manufacturing facility
What We Seek:
• Excellent communication skills to clearly communicate ideas to all levels within the organization
• Experience with ERP system (SAP) is a plus
• Ability to lead teams and implement projects through continuous improvement initiatives, such as Lean or Six Sigma (DMAIC) with hands-on application - engaging floor practitioner
• Experience in implementing Lean systems at the plant level (e.g. 6S, Kaizen events, line balancing, Kanban systems, and Value Stream Mapping)
• Experience with time and motion studies; capacity modelling
• Routinely works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires in-depth evaluation of factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and valuation criteria for obtaining results
• Experience in Advanced MS Office: Excel, Word, PowerPoint
• Experience with production planning and scheduling is a plus
Outstanding Candidates Will Have:
• Minimally 1+ years of experience in manufacturing, Internships and projects counted
• Studying for a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering or related technical discipline; Mechanical, Chemical, with applicable experience will be considered
• Experience with equipment layout and workflow
• Experience with cleanroom facilities is beneficial
• Ideal candidate will have experience with AutoCAD
Desired Major(s) & Graduation Year:
• Industrial Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, or related technical discipline; Mechanical, Chemical, with applicable experience will be considered
• Graduating between Spring 2025 and Spring 2026
Eligibility:
- Must be a currently enrolled student
- Available to work 40 hours a week, M-F (8a-5p) beginning in January 2025-June 2025
- Must be familiar with the universities requirements to participate in a co-op program
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
