Building Maintenance Supervisor, Assistant

Tacoma Public Utilities' (TPU) is establishing an eligible list for Building Maintenance Supervisor, Assistant that is good for one year. TPU's Power Shared Services division has a current open vacancy. In this role you will assign work and provide work direction to personnel involved in custodial and maintenance work at TPU and perform custodial and semi-skilled building maintenance and repair duties. 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Oversee and perform a variety of custodial duties as needed; clean restrooms; sweep, mop, wax and buff floors, dust; wash windows, walls, mirrors and partitions.
  • Oversee and perform a variety of repair duties on furniture, venetian blinds, doors, locks, hinges, cleaning equipment, clocks, floor and ceiling tiles and ceramic tiles as needed; patch holes in floors, ceilings and walls; replace light bulbs, fluorescent tubes and fire extinguishers.
  • Move a variety of furniture and equipment including furniture, office machines and partitions.
  • Set up auditorium, work rooms, training conference rooms and other rooms for meetings; move chairs, tables and audio/visual equipment; set up public address systems and lights.
  • Provide work direction and guidance to assigned employees; assign duties and review completed work; maintain routine employee records.
  • Operate a variety of equipment including city truck, manual and electrical tools, hand trucks, dollies, ladders, lift trucks, vacuums, buffers and hand carts.
  • Inspect building for need of repair and maintenance; perform routine security inspections.
  • Requisition supplies and materials according to established procedures.
  • Maintain records of activities performed and supplies utilized.

 

Qualifications

An equivalent combination to:

  • Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and skills listed above AND
  • Two years of commercial custodian and/or commercial building maintenance experience OR
  • Two years' experience as a city of Tacoma Building Maintenance Worker


LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid Washington Driver's license

  • Principles of assigning work and providing work direction to others.
  • Methods, tools and equipment used in building maintenance and repair work.
  • Methods, equipment and materials used in custodial work.
  • Health and safety regulations.
  • Requirements of maintaining buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.
  • Record-keeping techniques.
  • Oral and written communications skills.
  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Perform custodial and semi-skilled building maintenance and repair duties at an assigned facility.
  • Provide work direction to Building Maintenance Workers and custodial personnel.
  • Evaluate repair and maintenance needs.
  • Make minor mechanical and electrical repairs.
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Maintain simple records.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Perform minor maintenance using a variety of tools and machines utilized in the basic trades.
  • Operate a variety of equipment including city truck, manual and electrical tools, hand trucks, dollies, ladders, lift trucks, forklift, vacuums, buffers and hand carts.
  • Plan and organize work.

Appointment is subject to passing a background check and a pre-employment medical examination that will include drug screening. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between The City of Tacoma and Local 17. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.
