The Challenge

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Technician III to join our Division Design Construction (DDC) Engineering team.

 

In this role, you will:

  • Perform moderate to advanced work using CADD workstations to assist in the delivery of the Resurfacing, System Preservation, Interstate Maintenance, Municipal Projects, and Spot Safety Program.
  • Draft typical sections and vicinity maps.
  • Gather relevant field data.
  • Develop preliminary estimates and quantities summaries.
  • Compile specifications, calculate horizontal and vertical alignments, process earthwork and other quantities, and use corridor modeling.
  • Develop Plan packages in accordance with NCDOT policy, standards, specifications, ADA, MUTCD, AASHTO, and NPDES requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation of plan submittal packages, estimates, and documentation for letting of resurfacing projects.
  • Perform engineering technician duties applying engineering techniques, skills, and knowledge on engineering projects in the Division Design Construct Unit.
  • Support engineers in consultation, investigation, evaluation and planning, design, design review, and approval.
  • Support division staff to supply additional copies of maps, plans, charts, etc. supporting their jobs.
  • Maintain plotter supplies, such as correct paper sizes and ink.
  • Assist in technical aspects to accomplish assigned tasks.

What You Bring

  •   General knowledge of civil engineering principles/practices as applied to location, design, maintenance and construction of highways.
  • Moderate to advanced skills in roadway drafting/design.
  • Skills operating drafting instruments.
  • Ability to understand roadway plan preparation, provisions, and specifications, take field information and investigation data and prepare, modify or refine roadway designs.
  • Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions.
  • Maturity to apply sound judgment in making decisions.
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
  • Computer experience, including Microsoft Office, CADD, MicroStation, Corridor Modeling, Geo-Pak workstations, and drafting software.
  • Knowledge of math functions, such as algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and procedures.
  • Experience taking notes, collecting field data, performing calculations, and preparing plans and routine reports.
  • Ability to safely perform manual tasks and work outside in all weather, terrain, and hours.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Safety toe footwear.

Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree in Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
  • 3+ years of relevant technician experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
