Special Education Teacher - Visually Impaired - Infant/Toddler OR Special Ed Instructor (ID 2797)

The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) is looking for a qualified educator to join the Early Education HOPE Infant Toddler Program, part of the Learning and Leadership Services Division. This role will be filled based on the credentials of the selected candidate and may be offered in one of the following two ways: Special Education Teacher – Visually Impaired (Infant/Toddler) 

• Requires a valid California Education Specialist Credential with authorization in Visual Impairment (VI), or an equivalent credential. OR Special Education Teacher – Visually Impaired and Orientation & Mobility Instructor (Infant/Toddler) Requires both: 

• A valid California Education Specialist Credential with authorization in Visual Impairment (VI), or an equivalent credential; AND, 

• A valid California Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credential with authorization in Orientation and Mobility, or an equivalent document The position is based at SDCOE’s main campus in San Diego (92111). Travel throughout the county is required to serve students and families.

Requirements / Qualifications

This position requires the following Education and Experience and Certificates, Licenses, Credentials:

Education: 

A bachelor’s degree in visual impairment or graduate studies in visual impairment, or related field (if applying for Special Education Teacher - Visually Impaired - Infant/Toddler)

A bachelor’s degree in visual impairment and orientation and mobility or graduate studies in visual impairment, orientation and mobility, or related field (if applying for Special Education Teacher - Visually Impaired and Orientation and Mobility Instructor - Infant/Toddler)

Experience:

At least three (3) years of successful experience in early childhood programs for children with special needs, inclusive of children with visual impairments. Experience with infants and toddlers (birth to age 3) who have visual impairments. Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team responsible for assessment, writing IFSPs, providing consultation, support and strategies to families of young children with disabilities. 

Certificates, Licenses, Credentials:

  • Valid California Education Specialist credential with authorization in Visual Impairment (VI), or equivalent credential (required)
  • Valid California Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credential with an authorization in Orientation and Mobility, or an equivalent document (required if providing O&M services)

This position requires up-to-date immunizations, including current Measles and Pertussis vaccinations.

A stipend of $6,000, paid out after three (3) years of consecutive full-time service, shall be paid to unit members hired on or after July 1, 2018 who have not received payment under this clause prior to July 1, 2023, hold state certification and are employed as Audiologists, Speech Hearing and Language Specialists, or in positions requiring authorizations for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH), Visually Impaired (VI) or Orientation and Mobility (O&M). The stipend will be paid out at the completion of the third instructional year.

This position is also eligible for Article XV: Salary, Section 2.C.5.B of the negotiated agreement between SDCOE and SDCAE.

*Note: Valid California credentials are a requirement at the time of hire. If you do not possess the required California credentials, you may go to the California Commission of Teacher Credentialing website https://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/out-of-state-app for details on meeting California’s requirements.
