Rockwell Automation

Student Co-op College

May 2023 • Mayfield Heights, OH

What I liked

Rockwell is a great company for interns and co-ops. The compensation is competitive and the students are involved in meaningful work at the company, not pushed to the side.

What I wish was different

It would be great if the job posting had more specific details on what a particular position will be doing. Currently, the hardware engineering co-op description is very general and actual work depends greatly on what team you are assigned to.

Advice

There is a high chance of being offered another internship or job if you are an engineering intern.

Software Engineer

May - August 2022 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I really enjoyed my time being in Wisconsin. I had never been there before and this was my first time experiencing that. I also enjoyed the team aspect at Rockwell. Everyone is super supportive and was always willing to give a helping hand. I think this is important and helped me to succeed at Rockwell. I also got to see my project be implemented into the Rockwell system. Customers were able to give their feedback on my interface. This was really exciting and cool.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time. I really enjoyed the schedule and the chance to be a real job setting.

Advice

Learn as much as you can and ask as many questions as you can!

Advanced Technology Intern

May - August 2021 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I really liked the welcoming and innovative environment, as I felt encouraged to do well and explore at the same time. I believe that Rockwell is a great workplace, especially with its high emphasis on continually improving the culture there.

What I wish was different

There were times where I wished I was in-person, not remote, but that is not Rockwell's fault as it was due to COVID-related mitigation practices. In addition, I could have connected with my principal mentor/researcher better if we were both in-person.

Advice

I would suggest that potential interns work hard to challenge themselves. It can be hard to jump into an internship without knowing the most about industrial automation, but Rockwell's resources will propel interns to the top. Overall, it is important for interns to learn how to manage their time to maximize their internship experience.

Embedded Software Engineering Co-op

January - August 2021 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

Fantastic co-op experience. I was given real work as if I was a full-time employee, but I was also given a ton of support because I am still a student. I could ask anyone on my 8-person team any question I had, I was assigned a specific mentor who met with me twice a week to make sure I wasn't stuck and had the support I needed, and I also worked with a co-op coordinator who helped me reach my broader goals for the internship. I felt like my team trusted and respected me as a hard worker, while I was still given the space to grow and learn within the company. I was honestly blown away by the amazing culture and drive of everyone I interacted with. I have heard horror stories of internships at other places from friends and Reddit, but those could not be further from my experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been in-person, and that I would have had the opportunity to network/socialize more with other co-ops and interns. This seems to be a non-issue when the co-ops are all in person.

Advice

Ask questions sooner. Just like in college, you'll have a solid workload but simultaneously lots of opportunities to get help with that workload. In college, this would look like going to office hours, forming study groups, and working ahead to identify problems early. For me while I was at Rockwell, I got support by asking all of the questions I had - even the stupid ones - to my team, or subject-matter-experts outside my team. You should still try to figure it out on your own, but don't spend a ton of time or you risk falling behind.

Technical Sales Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

The culture at Rockwell was amazing - even as a remote internship! The program was set up well for the interns and our goals for the summer were clearly defined. I never experience a time when a co-worker was not willing to help me with a problem or answer a question that I had. I had a great experience this summer working for them and I learned a lot!

Finance Intern

May - August 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

Rockwell provides a very comprehensive experience. They place you in one of various areas within their finance department, where you get to work closely with an assigned manager. Personally, I was assigned the tax department, which was an area where the work was largely project based. Rockwell also places great importance on giving their interns meaningful work. There were days where I was doing typical intern work, but at the end of the summer, I felt I got to do many projects that impacted the tax team positively. Outside of actual work assignments, Rockwell encourages their interns to grow their network by talking with professionals in other areas of finance. They also provide opportunities to learn about their structure if their finance department through a series of presentations.

What I wish was different

There is not much I wish would have been different. Rockwell does a fantastic job of creating a well rounded and overall positive experience.
