SUNY Morrisville

Strength and Conditioning Coach Intern

September 2019 • Morrisville, NY

What I liked

I was able to see the programming process first hand and even develop a preseason program for the softball team. When deciding excercises for softball, we watched different videos of the game and specific workouts other people use. While watching the videos we would stop and actually do the exercise to see if it targets an area specifc to the sport and then we would start to create our own exercise based on the exercises we watched. It was great! It was very specific from the types of exercises, what phase of their exercise (eccentric, hybrid, endurance, etc.) so that changed the types of exercises or how they were done, how many reps and sets. We also had to take into account, for sports in their game season, when a game was and when they have lift before and after the game. Dependent on who they played also affected the difficulty of the workout following the game. I was able to assist during their actual lift times to correct their form, provide knowledge behind the exericses and build a relationship with the athletes.

What I wish was different

Based on my schedule and the weight rooms schedule, I was not able to meet as oftern as I would have liked so she created the ice hockey, lacrosse, and soccers (both men's and women's) workout programs without me. I did, however, help decide which phases the teams should be in throughout their game season.

Advice

Be familiar with the terms of exercises. When deciding exercises for softball I forgot or just didn't pay attention to the terms I knew from my years as an athlete and the different classes I took on campus so when it came to planning the exercises for softball I had to demonstrate and explain the movement and what the exercise was targeting. Some of those exercises the coach had not heard of so it would have been helpdul to know the names of exercises.

Athletic Trainer Intern

September 2019 • Morrisville, NY

What I liked

The atmosphere is great! It is a light, joking environment where everyone laughs and gets along but they get serious when they need to. There are other interns that work there as well as work-study students so it is a comfortable environment. Plus athletes are always coming and going from the training room. They were very flexible when it came to my classes and my availability. Whenever I wanted to adjust a time they were very able to work with me.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to do more hands-on learning as I mainly observe and get as close as I can since I am not certified. Because of that, I am seen more as a watergirl for athletes but I also tape wrists, hands, and thumbs while also providing bags of ice from time to time. I get some experience of being an AT but I didn't get the palpation education that I really wanted from this internship.

Advice

Ask lots of questions. This shows you're engaged, eager to learn, and builds a relationship slowly with the AT you're working with.
